Running Training Tips by Dr. Stuart Weiss - Part 1

My Condura Skyway Marathon 2011 Race kit
Hello running world! I received today the delivery of my Condura Skyway Marathon 2011 race kit, and part of the kit is a printed training tips from Dr. Stuart Weiss. I would like to share these tips in two parts, here it goes;

Running is one of the healthiest things you can do for yourself. However, as in any sport, there can be health and medical risks. Follow these tips to protect yourself as you embark on your training.

a. Have a physical exam before you start a regular exercise program - Tell your physician what you plan to do, including the volume and intensity of your training and any races you have planned. Be as clear and precise as possible.

b. Have an annual physical exam, no matter how healthy your lifestyle - Many conditions and syndromes are unrelated to your exercise level and have mild or vague symptoms or no symptoms at all. If you're over 40, get an exercise stress test. Follow-up after the exam by getting extra tests that are recommended. At any time, see your doctor immediately if you experience new chest pain, pressure, unusual sweating or shortness of breath. Less urgently, see a sports medicine physician if you feel any pain while running that causes you to change your form.

c. Think carefully about caffeine before races - If you habitually drink a cup or two of coffee or tea in the morning before you run or race, or consume a caffeine-containing energy gel during a run, you should feel free to do the same on race day. If you don't normally use caffeine before or during your run, don't do on race day. You may experience dehydration or upset your digestion. There is some research suggesting that the caffeine equivalent of two cups of coffee can limit blood flow to the heart during exercise. Discuss your risk with your doctor so you can make the best decision.

d. Consider taking baby aspirin before you run or race - Some doctors recommend a daily baby aspirin (81mg) to runners to reduce risk of sudden death while running due to clumps of platelets forming in the blood. Discuss this risk with your doctor so you can make an informed and responsible decision. If taking daily baby aspirin isn't the healthiest decision for you, you might consider taking one on race morning.

To be continued...

Why I Blog

Our Church Wedding, 21 August 2009

I blog because I am a living example of God's creation, that having this precious life is the greatest gift of God to me. And I wanted to live this life to the fullest!

I blog to show how I appreciate the marvels of living, to express how my eyes see the beauty of the nature and man, to spread the word that living life can be simple but meaningful.

I blog to speak out how I feel and what I think, to turn my feelings and thoughts into hundreds of letters, phrases and paragraphs, that will be best understood by the reading eyes and mind as well as the compassionate heart.

I blog to express whatever words left unspoken, actions left undone; to show how I love the people around me and much I value them and that they are a part of me, my life.

I blog because I am still living and this is my Journey to Life!

Sharing the E-mail Message of My Ninang Edith

Good evening world! My  law schooling resumed yesterday, it's my second semester already. I will be busy again in school matters especially that our midterm examination will be on the last week of January.

I just want to share the e-mail my of Ninang Edith, as I have been doing since last year. I love the inspirational messages, I hope you will find it the same way as I do. Enjoy reading!!

Just up the road from my home is a field, with two horses in it. From a distance, each horse looks like any other horse. But if you stop your car, or are walking by, you will notice something quite amazing!
Looking into the eyes of one horse will disclose that he is blind.
His owner has chosen not to have him put down, but has made a good home for him. This alone is amazing.  If you stand nearby and listen, you will hear the sound of a bell.  Looking around for the source of the sound, you will see that it comes from the smaller horse in the field. Attached to the horse's halter is a small bell. It lets the blind friend know where the other horse is, so he can follow.

As you stand and watch these two friends, you will see that the horse with the bell is always checking on the blind horse, and that the blind horse will listen for the bell and then slowly walk to where the other horse is, trusting that he will not be led astray.

When the horse with the bell returns to the shelter of the barn each evening, it stops occasionally and looks back, making sure that the blind friend is not too far behind to hear the bell.

Like the owners of these two horses, God does not throw us away just because we are not perfect or because we have problems or challenges.

He watches over us and even brings others into our lives to help us when we are in need.
Sometimes we are the blind horse being guided by the little ringing bell of those who God places in our lives. Other times we are the guide horse, helping others to find their way.

Good friends are like that; you may not always see them, but you know they are always there.

Please listen for my bell and I will listen for yours, and remember everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

Live simply, Love generously, Care deeply, Speak kindly ...

Leave the rest to God

FOR WE WALK BY FAITH AND NOT BY SIGHT

Happy New Year 2011 - Our Media Noche

Quezon City, 01 January 2011- Happy New Year folks! I hope we all had a great Media Noche and New Year's Eve celebration in our homes, in party places or anywhere we are last midnight.

Last night New Year's Eve is the first time that me and my wife are not together in celebrating and welcoming the New Year. For the past five years we have been side by side in this event, it may be a New Year celebration in Manila, in Cebu or in Dipolog. This time my beloved wife have overnight duty at the Fabella Memorial Hospital where she work as Medical Officer III at the Pediatric Department.

It's not a bad thought though, she's not with me because she need to be at the hospital to serve those in need, confined, walk-in or emergency patients alike. It is great and noble to be at the service for others.

I still remember that last December 31, 2006, we celebrated the New Year's Eve at the Sacred Heart Hospital owned by Southwestern University in Cebu City where she studied Medicine. It was her Senior Clerkship that time and she was on duty that New Year's Eve, so I traveled from Manila and joined her at the hospital to welcome the year 2007.

Back here at the present time, below are my shots of the simple Media Noche we prepared last night. Kinda food photography because it was just focused on the food. I personally made the Penne Spaghetti in sweet sauce and the Buko Salad.

May we all have a Bountiful New Year 2011. May God Bless us always!

Last Post for 2010 - Happy New Year 2011!!!

Five (5) minutes to midnight! It's new year 2011! This is my last post for the year 2010. Thank you God for the year we had, though good and bad.

Welcome year 2011! God bless us all in every days of our lives! Happy New Year from me and my family to yours!

Last Run for the Year 2010

Today is December 31, 2010, the last day of the year and I wanted to end my year running!

But before starting my routine, I dropped by the Most Holy Redeemer Church Parish Office to offer Thanksgiving Mass from our family for the year 2010 and for the upcoming year 2011.

The Most Holy Redeemer Church
The church is actually along my running route near our residence. I like the area because there are less people and vehicles plying the streets, Araneta Avenue which is part of my route is a wide road with spacious sidewalks where I can run safely.

The uphill portion of the route
The downhill portion

Cloudy day, 31st December 2010
It was a light 30 minutes run and walk routine for today. Especially that I have my digital camera on hand while running.

Looking forward for another running year! Have a healthy, wealthy and happy New Year to all!
